A -Prakarana Grantha- is a treatise or text which highlights and explains terms and models (prakriyas) or particular aspects of the Upanisads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras.
Drg Drsya Viveka is a Prakarana text which highlights the individual, his bondage, liberation and the means for liberation. It consists only of 46 verses. While some say that Adi Sankaracharya is the author of the text, others suggest that Vidyaranya is the author. But the majority of people hold that Bharati Tirtha, the guru of Vidyaranya, is the author.
Clear knowledge is called Viveka. The topic of Drg Drsya Viveka is the discriminative analysis between drk, the observer, experiencer or subject, and drsyam, the observed, experienced or object.
A discriminative enquiry between the two is required when there is a confusion. That mixing up is the cause of what is called samsara. We have to resolve this confusion for self-knowledge. Therefore the study of Drg Drsya Viveka becomes important.
